Subordinates’ Quest for Recognition in Hierarchy

The scholarship on hierarchy held the promise of exposing conditions systemic inequality in world politics. However, a significant strand it approached international order from above, privileging perspective dominant actors. I make case for from-below approach to hierarchical orders, recognising and accounting understudied experiences politics, but also developing more accurate understanding hierarchy. Through relational-sociological approach, conceptualise as socially differentiated system predicated recognition. experience misrecognition by way normative material constraints constitutes actors subordinates. propose framework subordinate actors’ navigation quest social identify three strategies that subordinates employ, depending misrecognising they counter (normative/material) recognition seek (internal/external). Subordinates may engage norm appropriation, alternative leveraging, salvation victimhood. demonstrate applicability examining Egypt’s aftermath 2013 military coup.
